Τα sequel υπάρχουν για περισσότερο από έναν αιώνα στον κινηματογράφο, αφού η πρώτη ταινία που είχε sequel ήταν το «The Birth of a Nation» το 1915, που τον επόμενο χρόνο ακολουθήθηκε από το «The Fall of a Nation». Από τότε και ειδικά από την δεκαετία του 1980 και μετά, τα sequel στον κινηματογράφο είναι αρκετά συχνά και συνήθως ακολουθούν μια σημαντική εμπορική επιτυχία.
